05 Jun Singing Bowls – Good Vibrations
Within the practice of meditation, many tools and instruments are used and enjoyed. Some 2,600 years ago (560-480 B.C.) in Tibet, Buddha implemented in his teachings the use of free-standing bells called Tibetan or Himalayan singing bowls.
These bowls are usually manually hammered and vary in size, materials, and tones. The small bowls are usually rested & played in the palm of the hand while the larger ones are rested and played on a cushion. The materials used to make the bowls vary per religion, but copper is the main material used in Buddhism. Some metal alloys are combined, each correlating to a particular energy.
- Mercury = Mercury
- Copper= Venus
- Tin= Jupiter
- Lead= Saturn
Lastly, other bowls are made of crystal and are preferred by some due to the higher pitch they produce.
Uses & Techniques
Though Tibetan singing bowls can be used for cooking and place offerings, many monasteries and temples mainly use them for meditation. By striking the outside rim or belly of the bowl with a padded mallet in a circular motion, three harmonic sounds are produced. The 1st is known as the fundamental frequency while the other two are known as the 2nd and 3rd harmonic. It is believed that the upper theta brainwaves produced help the practitioner reach a deeper state of consciousness by quieting their ‘inner critic’. Creative thinking and intuition are increased as a result as well.
Energy medicine or energy healing is considered to be one of the other main uses for the Tibetan singing bowls. Dr. Mitchell Gaynor is the director of Medical Oncology and Integrative Medicine at Cornell Cancer Prevention in New York; and for many years, he has been using Tibetan singing bowls in work with cancer patients. He stated: “Sound can redress imbalances on every level of physiologic functioning and can play a positive role in the treatment of virtually any medical disorder.”
The medical director of the Deepak a Chopra Center in California, Dr. David Simon, believes that the sounds emitted from these bowls, along with chanting, are metabolized into an “endogenous opioid” (a painkiller effect) in our bodies.
As energy vortices within our body, chakras connect our physical with our spiritual body. Unbalanced chakras can be the cause of illness. In order to correct this, we can resort to the sine theta waves from the singing bowls. Each of the 7 main chakras resonates with a particular key to healing.
- Sacral =D
- Solar Plexus=E
- Third Eye=A
Removing negative, stagnant, or lifeless energy from a space helps with the Feng Shui. Some experience constant fatigue and mental blocks as a result of a negatively-charged environment. Many clear their businesses in the morning in an attempt to increase the influx of customers. Incense is usually prior to the bowls.
How Does It Work?
As previously mentioned, theta waves are emitted by these bowls, but why are they so important?
Our bodies, just like everything in the universe, has its own vibration, but with varying rates. If we were to alter the vibration rate of an object, then it’s structure can also alter. It is known that each organ or part of our body possesses a particular resonant frequency. When the body is harmonious, all frequencies flow very well together, but when there is an imbalance in the body, a “dis-ease” takes place. A hindered energy flow leads to an “out-of-sync” organ or part of the body and starts to lack a healthy vibration. At this point, the theta brainwaves are used to entrain our brain through pulsating sounds brought on by the bowls.
Handmade Singing Bowls are a plus.
Machine-made singing bowls do not “sing” for as long when played.
Adding water to a singing bowl will help see and experience the sound and vibration better leading to enhanced meditation and focus.
Placing and resting a singing bowl over your body helps lead to faster healing. (I.e. headaches, back pain)
When playing a small bowl, do not let any fingers touch it by keeping them close together and hand flat. Beginners find it helpful to place a palm-sized cushion between the bowl and palm while playing.
